The process of files getting damaged resulting from some hardware or software failure is called data corruption and this is one of the main problems that hosting companies face since the larger a hard disk drive is and the more data is filed on it, the more likely it is for data to be corrupted. You will find several fail-safes, yet often the info becomes corrupted silently, so neither the particular file system, nor the administrators notice a thing. As a result, a damaged file will be handled as a good one and if the hard drive is part of a RAID, the file will be duplicated on all other disk drives. In principle, this is done for redundancy, but in practice the damage will get worse. The moment some file gets damaged, it will be partially or fully unreadable, therefore a text file will not be readable, an image file will display a random combination of colors in case it opens at all and an archive will be impossible to unpack, so you risk sacrificing your content. Although the most widely used server file systems have various checks, they are likely to fail to find a problem early enough or require a vast period of time to check all of the files and the web hosting server will not be functional in the meantime.
No Data Corruption & Data Integrity in Cloud Website Hosting
We have tackled the matter of silent data corruption on all of our cloud website hosting
servers by using the modern Z file system, or ZFS. The latter is better than other file systems since it is the only one in existence which checks all the files in real time by using a checksum - a digital identifier that is unique for every single file. When you upload content to your account, it will be stored on several SSD drives and regularly synced between them for redundancy. ZFS constantly analyzes the checksum of all files and when any file is detected as corrupted, it's replaced promptly with a good copy from another disk. As this happens in real time, there's no risk that a bad file may remain or may be copied on the other SSDs. ZFS needs lots of physical memory to perform the real-time checks and the advantage of our cloud hosting platform is that we use multiple very powerful servers working together. In case you host your websites with us, your data will be intact no matter what.
No Data Corruption & Data Integrity in Semi-dedicated Hosting
In case you go for one of our semi-dedicated hosting
plans, you will not have to be concerned about silent file corruption because we use ZFS - a high level file system that keeps track of all the files in real time. Each time you upload a file to your account, ZFS will assign a unique digital fingerprint to it - the so-called checksum. That file will be synced between multiple SSD drives for redundancy, so if one drive fails, the other ones will take over. ZFS compares the checksum of all of the copies on the different drives and if it detects a corrupted copy, it replaces it with a healthy one from another drive. This happens immediately, so there will be no risk for any part of your content at any time. In contrast, all of the other file systems execute checks only after a system failure, but since they do not use anything similar to the checksums that ZFS uses, they will not detect silently corrupted files, so a corrupted copy could be replicated on the remaining drives as well and you can lose crucial information. Because this isn't the case with ZFS, we warrant the integrity of every single file you upload no matter what.
